The Teeth of the Cow: George Hamilton Green’s Music and Comics

DESCRIPTION

George Hamilton Green was a musician, composer, Foley artist, and cartoonist who was known for his xylophone virtuosity. He and his brother Joe toured America in the 1910s, performing a variety of music including classical and ragtime pieces. Green became a successful xylophone player and recorded around a thousand albums, with one of his songs, Alabama Moon, becoming popular in the 1920s. In 1928, he recorded the sound effects for the first short animation film by Walt Disney, Steamboat Willie", which featured the xylophone being played on a cow's teeth. Green's music career faded during the swing era, and he abruptly stopped playing in the middle of a radio session in 1946. He then turned to cartoons, with his work being published in the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's. Green died in Woodstock in 1970.
