Introducing... David Kanaga

OK, we don't know much about David Kanaga, because the man seems to steer clear from the media. But we guess that his music speaks for itself (and on his behalf)...

Drawing inspiration from very different sources, from video game music to Russian classical repertoire, Kanaga is one of the most exciting (anti)classical music composers we have stepped into recently. Together with Ed Key, he is behind the design of Proteus, an exploration video game released in 2013. A perfect example of what sort of beautiful experiences you can have if you lose yourself in the world of independent video games, Proteus is very much about sound as it is about graphic design. No wonder that we ended up buying its (imaginary) soundtrack on Kanaga's own Bandcamp (and yes, we indulged in some more shopping, while we were at it).

We would definitely recommend having a listen to his version of Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto, just to get a better sense of why we love Kanaga... Did anyone say De Gennaro's Hippos Epos?

Dunque, non è che si sappia molto di questo David Kanaga: a quanto pare, il nostro non è esattamente un amante dei media. Ma in questo caso è lecito dire che la sua musica parli per lui...

Ci sono parecchi riferimenti musicali nella sua musica, dai video giochi al repertorio classico russo, e questo è uno dei motivi per cui abbiamo deciso di parlartene. Insieme a Ed Key, Kanaga ha prodotto nel 2013 un videogioco, Proteus, dove il suono è parte integrante della progettazione. Un esempio davvero efficace di quali meraviglie si possano incontrare quando ci si perde nel mondo dei videogiochi indipendenti. Non è un caso insomma se abbiamo deciso di acquistare la sua colonna sonora immaginaria direttamente sulla pagina Bandcamp di Kanaga (e sì, già che c'eravamo abbiamo fatto qualche ulteriore spesuccia).

Ti raccomandiamo caldamente di ascoltare la sua versione del Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra n. 2 di Šostakovič, così puoi farti un'idea del perché ci piaccia così tanto. Qualcuno ha detto Hippos Epos di Sebastiano De Gennaro?

5 Lessons on Music with Alessandro Solbiati

We will never hide the fact that we see 19'40'' as an educational platform. Call us pretentious and naive (we still live in a world dominated by turbocapitalism, don't we?), we would still think that the albums we release and the posts we publish on our blog should be seen as significant landmarks of your journey with us. In the next months (and years) we will try to bring you the most diverse, unpredictable and exciting music content you could expect from our large-scale project. This is why today we are really happy to introduce you to Alessandro Solbiati and his lessons on classical music for Radio 3, Rai's channel dedicated to art music, literature and politics.
It is probably safe to say that Solbiati is one of the most influential figures of Italian contemporary music. Born in 1956 in Busto Arsizio, near Milan, he studied composition with Sandro Gorli and Franco Donatoni, and he is currently teaching composition at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. In his lessons for Radio 3, Solbiati will take you through a journey encompassing the music of Ligeti, Nono, Berio, Ravel, Poulenc and Rachmaninov.

Non ti nasconderemo certo il fatto che dietro 19'40'' si celi anche un intento educativo. Certo, parlare di educazione oggi, nel regno del divertimento senza fine e della irrefrenabile soddisfazione di tutti i desideri (sì, stiamo parlando del tardocapitalismo), suona al tempo stesso pretenzioso ed ingenuo. Prendici come pretenziosi ed ingenui, se credi, ma sappi che noi vediamo ogni nostra uscita e ogni nostro post su questo blog come tappe di un viaggio che ti porterà nei prossimi mesi (ed anni) ad approfondire e scoprire un repertorio variegato, imprevedibile ed emozionante. Per questo oggi siamo molto contenti di presentarti le lezioni di musica che Alessandro Solbiati ha recentemente tenuto per Radio 3.
Nato nel 1954 a Busto Arsizio, Solbiati ha studiato composizione con Sandro Gorli e Franco Donatoni ed è attualmente docente di composizione presso il Conservatorio G. Verdi di Milano. Shotgun Boogie: New Orleans

Do you remember Katrina? How has New Orleans changed since then? How has the music community been affected by the catastrophe? Armed with a film crew and a travel visa, Italian sound engineer Michele Boreggi chronicles his experiences creating a documentary series with musicians from New Orleans. Together with US fellows Colleen Rowley, Hannah Swenson and Sean O'Grady, Michele meets with locals in their homes for intimate acoustic performances and conversations addressing contemporary social issues. Shotgun Boogie consists of twelve episodes with 3 different sections (Reflections, Explorations, Conversations). Is New Orleans similar to Genoa, or more like Naples? We don't know yet, but we can't wait to see the entire series. Watch the trailer to feel as excited as we are, and find more about it here.

Chissà a che cosa pensi quando diciamo New Orleans. All'uragano? Ai funerali della comunità di colore, quelli itineranti con musica? Com'è vivere a New Orleans oggi? Fa ridere pensare che il nome viene da Filippo II, duca di Orléans: cerca il suo ritratto e poi torna a pensare agli Stati Uniti del jazz... OK, ci stiamo perdendo. Volevamo parlarti di Shotgun Boogie, documentario dell'ingegnere del suono Michele Boreggi. Michele se ne è andato a spasso per la più grande città della Louisiana (la cui capitale in realtà è Baton Rouge) con i suoi amici Colleen Rowley, Hannah Swenson e Sean O'Grady. È entrato nelle case dei musicisti del luogo, li ha fatti suonare e parlare e ne ha tirato fuori un documentario di 12 puntate, divise in 3 sezioni (Reflections, Explorations, Conversations). Harry in the Sky with Diamonds

«American composer, theorist, instrument maker and performer. He dedicated most of his life to implementing an alternative to equal temperament, which he found incapable of the true consonance his ear and essentially tonal aesthetic demanded. He invented an approach to just intonation he called ‘monophony’; realizing that traditional instruments and performers would be inimical to his system, he designed and constructed new and adapted instruments, developed notational systems, and trained performing groups wherever he was living and working. Ci piacciono i personaggi liminali, gli svantaggiati, i pugili che lottano con una mano legata, i musicisti che in un delirio superomistico cercano di cambiare da soli il corso della musica. Certi fatti possono avvenire solo in paesi lontani, dove i legami con la tradizione si fanno più labili ed è possibile un Harry Partch, musicista compositore costruttore di strumenti didatta visionario. Qui sopra puoi vedere/ascoltare Delusion of the Fury, dramma in due atti ispirato all'Africa e al Giappone. Ebbe il suo battesimo nel 1969, ma da allora non è che si sia scritta tanta musica così. No?

How do you like video games?

Let's be clear once and for all: we are not big fans of that taurine drink and the bells and whistles surrounding it. Calling the music produced in the context of its (gosh) academy "avant-garde" is utter (red)bullshit, trust us. For "avant-garde electronic music", you should look somewhere else. We will soon pinpoint it for you, don't worry. Indeed, some of their output is interesting, even exciting, but let's just try and be precise with therms, OK? Cool.

Nonetheless, the aforementioned taurine thingy has managed to warm our hearts up with a documentary about video game music. Some of us here at 19'40'' are nerds in disguise. Not even particularly in disguise, to be honest. So we like video games, and we like music, and we have been toying with the idea of merging the twos in our recording series for some time. While we make up our minds, and put the whole thing into production, enjoy this series, which is still as fresh as a can of... orange soda!

Cerchiamo di esser chiari una volta per tutte: non siamo dei grandi fan della bevanda taurina e delle fanfare che la circondano. Definire la musica che viene prodotta all'interno della sua (gesù) accademia "d'avanguardia" è una discreta stronzata. credeteci. Se cercate "musica elettronica d'avanguardia", dovete rivolgere il vostro sguardo altrove. Prima o poi ve lo indicheremo noi, non vi preoccupate. Certo, quella musica lì è interessante, anche eccitante alle volte, ma è importante usare le parole in modo corretto, OK? Benissimo.

Nonostante questa premessa, la suddetta cosa taurina ci ha scaldato i cuori con un documentario sulla musica per i videogiochi. Qualcuno di noi qui a 19'40'' è un discreto nerd sotto copertura. Neanche tanto sotto copertura, a dire il vero. Ci piacciono i videogiochi e ci piace la musica, di fatti da un po' ci stiamo baloccando con il pensiero di unire le due cose nella nostra collana discografica. Mentre ci schiariamo le idee e passiamo all'azione, voi godetevi questo documentario in più episodi. Ha due anni, ma è ancora fresco come una lattina di... aranciata!
